WHAT ARE SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS?

Sexually transmitted infections, also known as sexually transmitted diseases, are viruses, bacteria, or funguses passed from person to person through vaginal, oral, or anal sex. 

These diseases are common in the United States, and it is important to protect yourself as millions of people are infected each year. 

Prevention

The best way to prevent STIs is to take steps to prevent infection or exposure.

Use Condoms

Using condoms correctly and consistently can reduce your risk of infection exposure.

Every time you have vaginal, oral, or anal sex, you should you a condom.

Reduce Sex Partners

Reducing your number of sex partners or practicing abstinence can lower your risk of infection.

Get Tested

You should get tested on a regular basis to ensure you are not infected.

Partners you are engaging with sexually should also be tested.

Diseases

  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): Common, treatable condition that occurs when there is too much bacteria in the vagina.

  • Chlamydia: Occurs in both men and women, but can cause permanent damage to a woman’s reproductive system.

  • Gonorrhea: Infects the genitals, rectum and throat. It is most common in people 15-24 years old.

  • Genital Herpes: Caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2).

  • HIV/AIDS: Attacks the body’s immune system and can lead to AIDS if not treated. Once people get HIV, they have it for life.

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV): The most common STI in the U.S. It can lead to cervical cancer and other cancers.

  • Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen): Affects the cervix, penis, and rectum and can lead to serious issues if not treated.

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Caused by untreated STIs, this is an infection of the reproductive organs of women.

  • Syphilis: Caused by a bacteria, it can lead to serious health issues if not treated, including hearing loss and neurological symptoms.

  • Trichomoniasis: “Trich” is a very common, treatable STI. Only about 30% of people develop symptoms.

  • Infertility: Left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause more serious infections that lead to infertility.
