Wildfires are common in the Texas Panhandle and can be dangerous and fatal.
EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY if instructed by authorities. Protect yourself and your family by listening to authorities. Do not attempt to stay behind.
Preparing for Wildfires
Know Your Risks
Sign up for AMA Alerts to be notified of emergencies in Potter and Randall County. Keep your radio on and tuned to one of the local EAS stations, KGNC-AM (710) or KGNC-FM (97.9).
Make a Plan
Prepare your family by making an emergency plan that includes evacuation routes, meeting places and supplies needed.
Know evacuation routes and zones.
Protect Your Home
Use fire-resistant materials for building and repairs. Keep debris and leaves cleared from around your home. Have on hand a long hose on hand that can reach all areas of your property.
Important Documents
Keep insurance documents, IDs and other important documents up to date and in a safe location. Make copies of each and keep them in a fireproof location.
Pets and Livestock
Plan ahead to know where to evacuate livestock and pets, if possible. Clear areas around your barn and fence lines.
Be sure animals have identifiable tags or microchips.
Stock Supplies
Keep a first aid kit in your home and vehicle that has enough supplies for your entire family. Consider keeping battery power banks for your cell phone on hand.

During a Wildfire
Pay Attention
Listen to authorities for instructions on evacuation. Keep your radio on and tuned to one of the local EAS stations, KGNC-AM (710) or KGNC-FM (97.9).
Limit Smoke Inhalation
Wear an N95 mask, if possible, to reduce smoke inhalation. Stay inside if not ordered to evacuate to avoid exposure to smoke.
Evacuate Immediately
If instructed to evacuate, do not hesitate. Evacuate immediately.
Contact Your Doctor
If you need medical attention, contact your healthcare provider for further instructions. If it is a medical emergency, call 9-1-1. Be aware that emergency services may be delayed.
If Trapped
Call 9-1-1 if you are trapped. Give your location and turn on any available light to signal your location.
After a Wildfire
Listen to Authorities
Follow instructions from authorities to ensure it is safe to return home. Do not return home until you have instructions from authorities to do so.
Wear Protective Attire
During clean up, wear work gloves, protective clothing and shoes. Limit your exposure to smoke and debris by wearing a respirator and wetting debris while cleaning.
Document Damage
Take photos of your property to record any damage. Take inventory of your property and record those notes, as well.
